Easter Weekend Reflections

Holidays can be a difficult time for queer folks, regardless of where they live in the world. For many, our families of origin aren’t always the happiest of places. Chosen family becomes really important during these times. We try to offer events over seasons that are more typically seen as “family” holidays for exactly this reason – we want chosen family to feel accessible to people any time of the year, but especially around special occasions.

Reflecting on the spaces we provided free of charge this recent Easter long weekend feels nice.

On Good Friday we were invited along to DT’s Hotel to join their second ever Mario Kart tournament. Even though it was a spur of the moment decision to attend, we had a full table of smiling and laughing folks, happy to come out and meet some new people.

The main event was Easter Sunday. While open to everyone, hosts Ben Williams and Hamish Drummond wanted to specifically provide something for queer folks who are also neurodivergent. The result: a wholesome queer & neurodiverse picnic in Footscray Park. The weather was perfect, and it was so lovely to meet everybody who came along. Food, stories, and mutual understanding were shared between the 30 or so folks who attended.

We’re so proud to be part of creating spaces where people can just dive in, be themselves, and be instantly included. The incredible support we’re receiving from our community in Melbourne continues to allow us to drive meaningful change for LGBT+ folks in and around our city.
